lymphatic-drainage Swollen Limbs
lymphatic drainage is a type of gentle massage which is given to enhance the natural drainage of the lymph from the tissues . The lymph system depends on the contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels and the movement of skeletal muscles to push lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system.Various diseases like carcinoma of breast when treated surgically leads to swelling in the arm. This swelling is due to accumulation of lymph in the extremity.Lymphatic drainage with the help of intermittent compression therapy and gentle lymphatic massage is done to decrease the edema.
Dependent edema (swelling of feet) due to prolonged sitting or standing is also relieved by this method.
